Two New Medical-Grade Wheels Covering 45% Of Hospital Facility Applications

NINGBO – This week, packaging lines at Ningbo Shangxin Caster started humming with two new medical‑grade wheels that the company hopes will quietly change how hospitals think about replacement parts.

The 2.5‑inch and 5‑inch medical workstation casters aren't flashy. They're not made of exotic materials, and they won't win design awards. But together, these two sizes account for nearly half of all the casters used in hospital carts and workstations – roughly 45% of the application volume. That's a lot of beds, IV poles, and supply trolleys rolling around day after day.

"We went back to the basics," said a production manager at the factory. "We asked ourselves: what actually wears out first on these things? It's rarely the load capacity. It's the tread getting chewed up or the wheel flat‑spotting after being parked under a heavy cart for weeks. So we picked a material that fights those two problems."

That material is TPU – thermoplastic polyurethane. It's not the cheapest option, but it bends without cracking and holds up against abrasion better than standard urethane. The thinking is simple: if you can keep the tread intact for three years of normal use, the customer saves money on replacements and downtime. And when the wheel finally does wear out, you don't toss the whole cart – you just pop on a new wheel.

Cost‑wise, the numbers surprised even the factory team. Despite raw material prices climbing across the board, Shangxin says these new wheels come in roughly 15% cheaper than comparable products on the market today. Part of that is design efficiency – less waste in the core, better bearing placement – and part is just knowing where to cut without cutting corners. "We're not trying to be the cheapest," the manager added. "We're trying to be the most honest. If it lasts, that builds trust. And trust is what keeps buyers coming back."

The 2.5‑inch model has another trick: for applications where silence matters – think night shifts in patient wards or quiet corridors – the factory can swap the TPU tread for TPR (thermoplastic rubber). TPR naturally dampens vibration and noise, so the cart glides without that telltale rumble. Light‑duty medical carts and supply trolleys are the obvious fit.

For retailers, distributors, and medical equipment sellers, these casters represent a stock‑keeping decision: one line that covers nearly half your medical caster needs, with a reliability story you can actually explain to your customers. And for the buyers at hospitals and clinics, it's about not having to think about casters at all – they just work.

"We've been making casters for a long time," the manager said, watching the new wheels move down the line. "And we've learned that quality isn't something you claim in a brochure. It's something your customer discovers after two years of daily use. That's the kind of reputation we're after."

The first batch of 2,000 units is now being packaged and prepared for shipment, with samples available for OEM customers and distributors. More production runs are scheduled as orders come in.
